There's a window in every custom home build that only opens once. After framing is complete, before the drywall closes everything in, you have a brief but powerful opportunity to walk through your home and make decisions that will define how you live in it for decades. We call it the electrical walkthrough, and we treat it as one of the most important milestones in the entire build process.
It's Your Home. It Should Work the Way You Live.
A custom home isn't just a bigger version of a spec build, it's designed around how you actually live. And the electrical walkthrough is where that becomes real. We recently did one of these with the Clarks on their Bearspaw build. What started as a routine check turned into a series of small decisions that will quietly improve their daily life for as long as they live there. Take the home office. The Clarks have a desk, and like most people, they'd accepted the usual tangle of cords running up to the wall. But we asked a simple question: what if we put a floor plug directly under the desk instead? One cord down, a power bar, everything plugged in cleanly, no tripping, no visual clutter. It's a small thing. It costs almost nothing at this stage. After the drywall goes on, it's a major renovation. That's the whole point of this walkthrough.
The Details You Don't Think About Until It's Too Late
The electrical walkthrough isn't just about outlet placement. It's where you think through every system in your home while the walls are still open and changes are still easy.
Speakers.
The Clarks love music. By the time we finished the walkthrough, we'd mapped out six in-ceiling speakers; two in the great room, two in the kitchen, two in the ensuite. If you want whole-home audio, this is the moment to build it in. Running speaker wire after drywall means cutting into finished walls and ceilings. Do it now, and it disappears seamlessly into the structure.
TV and fireplace placement.
This one trips up a lot of homeowners. A TV above the fireplace looks great, until you realize there are clearance requirements based on the specific fireplace model and how far your mantel projects. On most models, for every inch the mantel extends outward, the bottom of your TV needs to be at least one inch above the top of the firebox. Get this wrong and you're either fighting the manufacturer's warranty or staring at a screen that's uncomfortably high. We walk through this with every client, physically mapping out the separation on-site so you can see it before anything is locked in.
Thermostat location.
Where your thermostat lives matters more than most people realize. Place it near a window with direct sun exposure and your HVAC system will be fighting false temperature readings all day. A few feet in the right direction makes your whole system more accurate and efficient. These are the decisions we make in the walkthrough; quietly, correctly, before they become problems.
Why This Only Happens Once
The pre-drywall phase is a short window. The trades have a schedule, and once insulation and drywall follow the rough-in, your access to the home's systems is essentially gone. Changes after that point aren't impossible, they're just expensive, disruptive, and visible.
